The economy has been steadily going down hill over the past six months. It appears that the economic situation in the United States shows no sign of improving any time soon. It is important that every one take control of their finances and take measures to safeguard yourself and your family.

On a Microsoft Word or Works Spreadsheet be prepared to take a financial inventory of yourself. Begin by listing what you own and exactly what you owe. Add everything you own then subtract your total debts. The result you receive will be your current net worth.

Create A Cash flow Worksheet. Go over all of your Credit Card Statements, Canceled Checks, Mortgage payments, Insurance premiums, Grocery receipts, Clothing and gas expenses. Your income and expenditures should balance. If not, you need to ask yourself did you make more money than you spent or did you spend more than you made.

Examine your Current Cash Flow. Start recording the amount of money you spend on a daily basis. Examples, Gas expenses, Tolls, Lunch. Upon completion your income and expenditures should balance. If not then you have some serious modifications to make to your daily spending habits.

Create a Budget and stick to it. A budget is in a sense a planning device, create a budget worksheet on the computer. The first thing you need to do is forecast the growth of your current net worth, then figure out what makes up your net worth. It is a good idea to estimate your current monthly expenses or regular bills, and try to forecast what your expenses will be for the next six to twelve months. If you are just about making your bills or maybe you are not able to meet the monthly bills, then you need to modify your spending. Decrease your expenditures.

Variable Spending is spending money or purchasing items that you have a degree of control over. Many items listed in this category would come under the heading of miscellaneous. A good example of Variable spending is eating dinner out or going to the Movies. These are things you can do without, they are not necessities. Decide how you can modify your spending so you have more cash in your pocket for emergencies. Keep track of any impulse spending. Sometimes people don't realize that impulse spending can put them in the poor house.

Save and Conserve Energy. Yes, it is possible to measure the amount of energy you are using in your home. Energy Guide has a "Home Analyzer" which explains how you can track and examine your energy usage. In addition, simple common sense things, like shutting off unnecessary lights, turning the thermostat down a few degrees will save electricity and gas.

Take advantage of Refinancing opportunities. Refinancing an existing mortgage, paying off credit cards or consolidating them into one payment. Poke holes in your budget, ask yourself the question? Am buying too much on credit cards? Am I buying things that I don't really need or could live with out? For many of us, the answer would be a definite YES! Once you begin to have control over your finances you will find your attainable goals become so much easier.

Set Financial Goals. Setting financial goals is critical, you must plan for the future. You need to protect yourself in case of injury or death. Remember the loved ones you leave behind are responsible for your debts and poor financial decisions. To protect yourself and family against a financial catastrophe, make sure you have adequate life insurance, health insurance, accident insurance and some kind of 401k or saving plan.

Last but not least, ask yourself, what are my financial goals? Estimate how long it will take you to reach your financial goal. If you do borrow money in form of a loan to pay off bills, make sure the loan carries insurance. Make up your mind that you are going to be in control and work toward completing the task.
