personal finance manager

Intuit-owned Mint.com is beginning its international expansion today with the launch of its personal finance platform in Canada.

Canadians can access Mint at Mint.com/Canada. The main difference between the Canadian version of Mint.com is that it connects to both Canadian banking financial institutions and U.S. banks and credit unions. Canadian users will still be able to aggregate financial accounts and transaction information, categorize spending, access personal financial data and more. Mint.com’s mobile apps for iPhone and Android will also be available on the iTunes Canada app store and Android Market.

The main barrier to Mint.com’s international expansion is bringing non-U.S. financial institutions onto the platform. But once Intuit does this, I’m fairly certain Mint.com will be able to see a significant growth in the number of users outside the U.S. Currently, Mint.com has 4.5 million users and connects to 16,000 financial institutions.

As Aaron Patzer, vice president and general manager of Intuit Personal Finance and founder of Mint states, “Our Canadian launch is just the beginning of Mint.com’s global expansion.”

CNN’s highly visual new iPad app hit the App Store on Tuesday morning, bringing many of the media company’s best-known products — including all of its articles and videos from CNN.com, as well as live breaking news video coverage and hourly radio updates — to the iPad for free.

Unlike the iPad apps of most other publications, CNN’s app [iTunes link] replicates neither the format of its website nor a newspaper layout. Instead, users are drawn to headlines laid upon enlarged thumbnails to explore different kinds of content — sports is juxtaposed against tech, which is sandwiched between stories on finance and government policy — although they also have the option to browse by section and headline in a text-only format as well.

“We’ve really worked to make this thing feel like it was meant for the iPad,” said KC Estenson, SVP and general manager of CNN.com. “It looks unlike any other thing that we’ve built. We wanted to know what sort of design and user interface would make [the content come] alive on the iPad.”

The app is also more social than any of those released by other major media properties. Comments are given prominent placement alongside articles, which are frequently refreshed. Users can also join the conversation directly from the app, and sign in to Facebookclass="blippr-nobr">Facebook and Twitterclass="blippr-nobr">Twitter to share and comment upon stories with their respective networks (e-mail is also, of course, a sharing option). Unfortunately text from the articles is not selectable, so sharing favorite clips or quotes can be a bit laborious.

Users can toggle between U.S. and international news, as well as save articles for later offline viewing. Breaking news alerts will appear as a notifications while the app is closed, which can be turned off in settings.

CNN’s app is, in my opinion, the best app from a single news source to date. The combination of access to live streaming video of breaking news and full commenting functionality ensure it will become my personal go-to resource for general world news on the iPad.

In addition to the iPad app, CNN’s iPhone app [iTunes link] has also been made free, part of the company’s decision to make their apps “available on as many devices as possible,” Estenson said. class='blippr-nobr'>Appsclass="blippr-nobr">Apps for class='blippr-nobr'>Androidclass="blippr-nobr">Android and other platforms are in the works, although no release dates have yet been named. CNN’s average monthly mobile audience is up 23% this year to 14.5 million, compared to last year’s monthly average of 11.7 million.

foreclosure report

"Treasury's reluctance to acknowledge HAMP's shortcomings has had real consequences," the bailout watchdog declared in its report. An "untold number of borrowers may go without help -- all because Treasury failed to acknowledge HAMP's shortcomings in time."

Housing experts have declared that the administration's botched program leaves the broader housing market and the economy susceptible to more shocks ahead, as foreclosed homes pile up, pulling down real estate values.

"Having dragged their feet through various revisions to the program, and with their ability to now redesign it shut down, they have ensured HAMP its place in the trash bin of history," said noted bond analyst Joshua Rosner, a managing director at Graham Fisher & Co. who analyzes housing.

The abundance of data in the oversight panel's report presents a picture of a flimsy government program that has been swamped by an unceasing flood of homeowners landing in trouble and houses sinking into foreclosure. Since the program began, nine new foreclosures have been initiated for every permanent loan modification that has been approved, the panel found.

Under the program, troubled homeowners who qualify are enrolled for three-month trial periods during which they make lower monthly payments. So long as they make their payments on time and document their distressed situation, borrowers are supposed to be automatically rolled into so-called permanent modification plan in which their monthly payments stay relatively flat for five years.

Some homeowners have been stuck in the trial phase for as long as 20 months, according to the Congressional Oversight Panel. The chairman of the panel, former Delaware Senator Ted Kaufman, called that "egregious," during Monday evening's call with reporters. He singled out for criticism the giant banks that collect mortgage payments--servicers, in industry parlance. He also blamed Treasury for failing to hold the mortgage companies to account.

"There is extensive anecdotal evidence servicers aren't living up to the rules," said Kaufman, a Democrat. "Treasury is not nearly being as forceful as they can."

The panel asserted that Treasury can levy penalties on mortgage companies for failing to abide by the program's rules. Treasury insists that it lacks such authority, though it clearly has the power to claw back the incentive payments it makes to servicers for enrolling homeowners in five-year modification plans. Despite heavy criticism from Congress, Treasury has withheld no payments. Treasury is now considering withholding payments for 132 modified loans, the panel's report notes.

Even those homeowners who have successfully navigated the Kafkaesque bureaucracy required to secure a loan modification have rarely received significant relief. Nearly 95 percent of such homeowners have ended up with higher principal balances after receiving a modification, according to the report. More than 76 percent of homeowners in the program owe more on their mortgage than the home is worth, a situation referred to as being "underwater."

About 10.8 million, or 22.5 percent, of all homeowners with a mortgage were underwater as of Sept. 30, according to CoreLogic, a data provider.

A range of housing experts have long argued that the foreclosure crisis can only be stemmed by a more aggressive program that shrinks the outstanding balances on mortgages. The Treasury and the financial industry has long resisted such calls on the grounds that it would cost someone money--either the banks or taxpayers.

Writing down principal balances on mortgages would give people whose are worth less than they owe greater incentive to stay current on their payments, say experts.

"Negative equity is a primary factor holding back the housing market and broader economy," Mark Fleming, CoreLogic's chief economist, said in a Monday statement.

According to the oversight panel's report, homeowners are falling further underwater after their loans are modified under Obama's plan. After their loan is restructured, the typical HAMP homeowner owes $1.25 on their mortgage for every $1.00 their home is worth.

The oversight panel zeroed in on the problem of underwater borrowers as a key challenge for the economy. With so many people underwater, many homeowners who would like to sell their properties and move to parts of the country with more abundant jobs are stuck in place. Some borrowers have opted to simply forego making payments and relinquish their homes to foreclosure.

"Negative equity can restrict the ability of homeowners to move, whether for family reasons or to pursue greater job opportunities, since home sale proceeds will not be sufficient to repay their loan," the report states. "It also provides an incentive for borrowers who can afford to pay their mortgages to stop paying intentionally and walk away."

This dynamic seems likely to worsen before it gets better, with many analysts anticipating that housing prices will continue to fall in much of the country through the end of next year. Housing prices have fallen by 30 percent nationwide since early 2006, according to the S&P/Case-Shiller Home Price Index.

Massad, the Treasury official overseeing the rescue program, said the department grasps that underwater borrowers are playing a significant role in exacerbating the foreclosure crisis. He emphasized that Treasury recently launched additional programs aimed at shrinking balances for people whose homes are worth less than they owe the bank.

But despite these programs, mortgage companies have reduced the principal for only three percent of the homeowners in the HAMP program, according to the the panel's report.

"Clearly, it's a big, big problem," said Kaufman.

Rosner and other experts assert that Treasury should force lenders to write down second mortgages, such as home equity lines of credit--a popular way in which homeowners turned increased real estate values into the cash during the boom. And if writing down those loans still leaves borrowers unable to make their monthly payments, primary mortgages should be written down, he added.

But that approach has been emphatically rejected by Treasury and the large banks, who are themselves on the hook for many second mortgages. While the largest four American banks generally sold off primary mortgages to investors and now merely collect fees for handling the bills, these same four banks themselves hold 43 percent of second mortgages--an amount reaching $420 billion, according to the panel.

That, say analysts, largely explains the dismal state of the administration's foreclosure program and Treasury's unwillingness to champion the only clear remedy: writing down principal balances. Indeed, the oversight panel concludes that forcing lenders to absorb losses on second mortgages could leave the four biggest banks severely crippled.

"Treasury's HAMP program has, in policy and practice, been a colossal failure," Rosner wrote in an e-mail. "Rather than working in the interests of borrowers and investors, whose interests are fundamentally aligned, HAMP appears to have been designed to shield banks and their captive servicers from the negative financial impact that a reasonable resolution to the crisis would require."

Fox News personality and former Gov. Mike Huckabee (R-AR) recently began appearing in television commercials calling for viewers to dial a 1-800 number to sign a repeal petition against health reform called “Repeal It Now.” The ad, a “project of Restore America’s Voice” (RAV), a political action committee run by Huckabee’s friend Ken Hoagland, also directs viewers to a website that solicits donations

According to disclosures filed with the FEC, RAV’s campaign is managed by a firm called the 949 Media Group. 949 has been paid tens of thousands of dollars to set up RAV’s website and Google search optimization, and receives a regular commission of $10,000 for related media work from RAV. ThinkProgress spoke to a representative from RAV, who told us that 949 is run by an individual named Derek Oberholtzer. According to the representative, Oberholtzer has worked with RAV since the PAC formed in October.

Oberholtzer is well known as scam artist who has used a myriad of tricks to defraud people out of their money. In addition to 949 Media Group, he started a number of companies, including “Apply 2 Save” (A2S) and Giant Media Works. Consumer report websites are rife with complaints about Oberholtzer’s odious business practices. In one scheme, Oberholtzer paid for radio and other advertisements telling distressed homeowners to contact his company A2S to pay a flat $595 fee to receive assistance in renegotiating their loans or to block a bank foreclosure. The Federal Trade Commission has prosecuted Oberholtzer for deceptive practices. In numerous cases, Oberholtzer took the $595 payment, and never did anything to stop a foreclosure or even contact the mortgage company in question. In many instances he continued billing his customers further fees totaling nearly $1,000 without lifting a finger to actually renegotiate their mortgage or halt a foreclosure, as his “Apply 2 Save” company promised.

Making Money on the Internet

Ok Go Explains There Are Lots Of Ways To Make Money If You Can Get Fans

from the everything's-possible dept

Over the last few years, we've covered many of the moves by the band Ok Go -- to build up a fanbase often with the help of amazingly viral videos, ditch their major record label (EMI), and explore new business model opportunities. In the last few days, two different members of Ok Go explained a bit more of the band's thinking in two separate places, and both are worth reading. First up, we have Tim Nordwind, who did an interview with Hypebot, where he explained the band's general view on file sharing:

Obviously we'd love for anyone who has our music to buy a copy. But again, we're realistic enough to know that most music can be found online for free. And trying to block people's access to it isn't good for bands or music. If music is going to be free, then musicians will simply have to find alternative methods to make a living in the music business. People are spending money on music, but it's on the technology to play it. They spend hundreds of dollars on Ipods, but then fill it with 80 gigs of free music. That's ok, but it's just a different world now, and bands must learn to adjust.

Elsewhere in the interview, he talks about the importance of making fans happy and how the band realizes that there are lots of different ways to make money, rather than just selling music directly:

Our videos have opened up many more opportunities for us to make the things we want to make, and to chase our best and wildest ideas. Yes, we need to figure out how to make a living in a world where people don't buy music anymore. But really, we've been doing that for the last ten years. Things like licensing, touring, merch, and also now making videos through corporate sponsorship have all allowed us to keep the lights on and continue making music.

Separately, last Friday, Damian Kulash wrote a nice writeup in the Wall Street Journal all about how bands can, should and will make money going forward. In many ways the piece reminds me a bit of my future of music business models post from earlier this year -- and Kulash even uses many of the same examples in his article (Corey Smith, Amanda Palmer, Josh Freese, etc.). It's a really worthwhile read as well. He starts by pointing out that for a little over half a century, the record labels had the world convinced that the "music" industry really was just the "recorded music" industry:

For a decade, analysts have been hyperventilating about the demise of the music industry. But music isn't going away. We're just moving out of the brief period--a flash in history's pan--when an artist could expect to make a living selling records alone. Music is as old as humanity itself, and just as difficult to define. It's an ephemeral, temporal and subjective experience.

For several decades, though, from about World War II until sometime in the last 10 years, the recording industry managed to successfully and profitably pin it down to a stable, if circular, definition: Music was recordings of music. Records not only made it possible for musicians to connect with listeners anywhere, at any time, but offered a discrete package for commoditization. It was the perfect bottling of lightning: A powerful experience could be packaged in plastic and then bought and sold like any other commercial product.

But, he notes, that time is now gone, thanks in large part to the internet. But that doesn't mean the music business is in trouble. Just the business of selling recorded music. But there's lots of things musicians can sell. He highlights Corey Smith and Smith's ability to make millions by giving away his music for free, and then touring. But he also points out that touring isn't for everyone. He covers how corporate licensing has become a bigger and bigger opportunity for bands that are getting popular. While he doesn't highlight the specific economics of it, what he's really talking about is that if your band is big, you can sell your fan's attention -- which is something Ok Go has done successfully by getting corporate sponsorship of their videos. As he notes, the sponsors provide more money than the record labels with many fewer strings:

These days, money coming from a record label often comes with more embedded creative restrictions than the marketing dollars of other industries. A record label typically measures success in number of records sold. Outside sponsors, by contrast, tend to take a broader view of success. The measuring stick could be mentions in the press, traffic to a website, email addresses collected or views of online videos. Artists have meaningful, direct, and emotional access to our fans, and at a time when capturing the public's attention is increasingly difficult for the army of competing marketers, that access is a big asset.

...

Now when we need funding for a large project, we look for a sponsor. A couple weeks ago, my band held an eight-mile musical street parade through Los Angeles, courtesy of Range Rover. They brought no cars, signage or branding; they just asked that we credit them in the documentation of it. A few weeks earlier, we released a music video made in partnership with Samsung, and in February, one was underwritten by State Farm.

We had complete creative control in the productions. At the end of each clip we thanked the company involved, and genuinely, because we truly are thankful. We got the money we needed to make what we want, our fans enjoyed our videos for free, and our corporate Medicis got what their marketing departments were after: millions of eyes and goodwill from our fans. While most bands struggle to wrestle modest video budgets from labels that see videos as loss leaders, ours wind up making us a profit.

Of course, that only works if you have a big enough fanbase, but that doesn't mean there aren't things that less well known bands can use to make money as well. He talks about an up-and-coming band in LA that doesn't even have a manager that was able make money:

The unsigned and unmanaged Los Angeles band Killola toured last summer and offered deluxe USB packages that included full albums, live recordings and access to two future private online concerts for $40 per piece. Killola grossed $18,000 and wound up in the black for their tour. Mr. Donnelly says, "I can't imagine they'll be ordering their yacht anytime soon, but traditionally bands at that point in their careers aren't even breaking even on tour."

The point, Kulash, notes, is that there's a lot of things a band can sell, focusing on "selling themselves." And, the thing he doesn't mention is that, when you're focusing on selling the overall experience that is "you" as a musician or a band, it's something that can't be freely copied. People can copy the music all they want, but they can't copy you. "You" are a scarce good that can't be "pirated." That's exactly what more and more musicians are figuring out these days, and it's helping to make many more artists profitable. And, no, it doesn't mean that any artist can make money. But it certainly looks like any artist that understands this can do a hell of a lot better than they would have otherwise, if they just relied on the old way of making money in the music business.

And that is a big reason why we’re all (bloggers, artists, labels) in the fucked up situation we’re in now. You know who has some power to help though? Artists. You guys need to step up and show some nuts man. You guys talk real tough in your raps and you say you support these sites when you have an album dropping, but then I don’t see you running up on your label’s VP of Legal demanding that the threats stop. If rap blogs helped you sell records, or launched your career, or got your name back out there, then guess what? It’s time to man the fuck up and put some pressure on those labels that you claim work for you. Stand up for something before there’s nothing left to stand up for.

    ^^

This rant would mean a lot more if there wasn’t a complex media toolbar at the bottom of the page and all types of ads surrounding it.

When your talking about “counting your money” you make for aggregating content from the same artists you are claiming to “help” ( and seriously, are you really helping Sean Combs at this point? or Wale? or Donnis? FOH) while simulanetously showing disdain for artists who don’t wanna play by your rules such as Wasalu or Curtis, how can you be suprised at the results?

You aren’t a tastemaker anymore– if you were, you wouldn’t post half the bullshit you post.

You want the pageviews, the ad-clicks, etc, and the more you have hoared out your internet space, the more you have brought on your own situation you find yourself in now.

You wanted to be part of the industry so bad you have now become tied into the politics– and the labels have been playing the game MUCH longer than you have, with a lot more resources.

The smart thing to do would be to PROVE your power (such as it is) to said labels and stop posting ALL of their shit– NOTHING from Atlantic, Interscope, etc.

Focus on artists you actually like and wish to promote– if you actually feel that you have the ability to create an artist and sustain their buzz, PROVE IT.

    But you won’t.

Because now you need the money those established artist brings via their page views.

IE used to be less secure than Firefox. I’ve heard it’s on par now with its security, but after installing AdBlock on FF and Chrome, I hate whenever I have to use IE for something. I also think Firefox and Chrome are faster, and their interfaces are easier to use for me. Those last couple things are just my opinion, though.

Firefox and Chrome are also easy to customize – you can put iTunes controls in your browser, block all ads (I don’t see anything on NR except the Complex bar), etc.

I haven’t used it a long time, but basically it puts a set of controls in your browser. Play, pause, next, previous, etc etc etc – so you can control your iTunes straight from your browser, without switching windows. I eventually just let my iTunes shuffle aimlessly, so I stopped using it.

that’s some fruity music industry pipe dream, though

    ^^

    Is it really, though?

I thought you owned the blog?

Or do the labels own you?

Whats the most important thing to you?

    You integrity? Or your payout?

I mean, you can have both, right?

Or are you more concerned with one than the other?

Because that’s what Ashmi’s 5,000 words at the top of this post sound like– he seems more upset that he’s realized he’s being used than anything else.

And if you truly feel like that, and you have any ounce of integrity or belief in your product, then you would simply say no.

But like I said, your survival is now tied into posting the video’s of Sean Combs, and the pictures of what CamelGOAT had for breakfast, and Kanye in his latest evening wear…

And the occasional Fred the Godson video– ya know, to keep it real and all that.

great read.. very true and very sad… gone are the days when you have the hot record on radio and its all you need… at this point both the artists and labels are getting sad for example puff has numerous videos out and the album hasn’t even dropped officially so a month or so after it does the hype will cease the record sales will slow all the way down and it’ll be on to the next project… value your own shit what happened to letting each single live a little like the old days…

    ^^

    Thats the key though.

    Why complain then?

The fuck this fat nigga got to be mad over? Telling artists to “take control”… For What?

Niggas know you still gonna download their song links to hulkshare and post them diligently.

And if he is saying, “Yea, I just wanna make my money,” then why is he ranting about what he would happen if he stopped posting their shit?

Its like I said– his survival is intertwined with these labels and their artists– he eats because they provide the REASON to come to his site, so what the fuck is his problem?

If you really feel some type of way, then say “No thanks” and deal with whatever consequences that arise.

Or just shut up, smoke your weed, and keep paying for loosie cigs and 50 cent bags of Doritos from the Corner Bodega with your ad money.

    Simple as that.

Oh yea…and then to download it for free of course. But if I can’t get it here…it’s not hard to google the song and get off of Hulkshare or some other file sharing service…for now anyways.

But in my college years I used to hit the garment district and buy fake Jordans and AF1′s to flip by the box…I know around this time every year is when the Feds crack down on illegal goods…I guess they decided to crackdown on music sharing this year too.

These companies do suck at the internet .. haha.. Very well articulated, they are watching their own demise. Just like you stated above about evolving with the times and technology. Just like they figured out a way of becoming profitable with MP3 w/ I tunes and all that. They need to react with a practice that helps them earn revenue in this blogosphere. After they deduct what they should PAY YOU for giving them access to all your thousands of readers. They are on the brink of losing major exposure. And I highly doubt anyone standing up.

    To promote THEM.

Sounds like this has been stewing for a while. The entire media industry is full of this fuckery.

One of the biggest manifestation has been Viacom suing YouTube and then the allegations that Viacom employees were uploading their promo content to YouTube.

And just last week we learned EMI posts songs on rapidshare and yet it’s the same industry that’s trying to sue them.

Sony arguably suffered the worst loss. Sony the music label / movie studio basically sabotaged Sony the technology company. At a time when MP3 players were just starting out, Sony hit us left, right, and center with their bullshit proprietary file formats. Then came the music cd rootkit nonsense where they were basically planting viruses on our computers. In the end, Apple basically came out of nowhere and stole their mojo. And I don’t feel the least bit sorry for them.

It’s like the media industry doesn’t have a clue. Type in your favorite artists/album into Google and add “rapidshare”, “usershare”, “sendspace”, “megaupload” or what ever and you’ve got a download link for what you’re looking for. Everytime one of these goes down, more just keep popping up.

Basically, the world will keep turning. If it ain’t on nahright, it’ll be some other blog. So I don’t blame eskay for competing. Plus the division between major / indie is so blurred these days it’s silly…have your favourite “major” label artists are on Koch.

Killing OnSmash was probably one of the stupidest things I ever seen. But whatever, life goes on.

The funny thing is that embargoes basically don’t exist on blogs. Usually the consequence for violating one is that your site gets blackballed from future exclusives. But industry’s got no choice but to come back to the same blogs because of how much reach they have lol.

so Blue Flame Agency sent a video to world premier but it was a raw copyright material that if uploaded to Youtube or any other video site the audio would have gotten silenced or removed altogether…

    you don’t like the song…

your not getting compensation to post it…

You don’t have a video player nor do you want to sent it to ONSMASH to upload it fearing a C&D notice or even a shutdown…

why bother then w/ the labels & agencies that make you go through these obstacles?

they’ll still pay you for an 2 week album advertisement wallpaper on the front of the site. right?

if the major artist & label want to you to premier a music video require that its already been uploaded to their generic youtube or whatever video player instead of a raw video file..

    problem solved no?

Funny thing is he stays coming back for the same reason labels stay coming back – to generate buzz. People on here looking for new music so what better place than to promote your own? Jihad could easily post his music on other blogs but ain’t no one checking for it.

At the end of the day if it ain’t nah right, it’s some other blog / website. But since it just ain’t the same elsewhere, we just keep coming back nah right.

We continue to debate back and forth yet we’ll still be back. And NahRight keeps ticking until the Feds are called in. And the audience fragments and tries to flock to whatever is next.

The industry basically wants something like radio where they have more control over the content. They can try to start their own thing but it’ll just flop cause they won’t have the audience. So they stay mad cause they gotta deal with all these sites with the audience they’re after.

On the real, Hulu’s the closest I’ve seen to media companies understanding the Internet. But of course, it’s only in the US so they stay losing.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acid3

“Acid3 test is a web test page which can be found at acid3.acidtests.org from the Web Standards Project that checks the performance of a web browser regarding the issue of following certain selected elements from web standards, especially relating to the Document Object Model (DOM) and JavaScript.

We are witnessing the fall of what we used to remember of the music industry. Eventually only a hand full of artist will be on majors, while the rest will be independent. It work make fiscal sense to do it any other way.
